New Zealand produces some amazing, locally made products that aren't always easily accessible in the mainstream / high street shops and supermarkets. Those boutique, artisan food producers that you don't come across unless you're walking the main streets of small-town New Zealand, or have the local knowledge to know that "the tastiest chocolate maker factory is just down the road". Without ordering products from 5 different suppliers and putting a New Zealand made gift box together ourselves, we didn't see a way to gift these awesome products easily.
The idea for Wicked Boxes had been niggling in our minds for years, but with full time jobs, a business to run and a busy family life, we just didn't have the time to see it into fruition. Until March 2020, when COVID-19 hit New Zealand and we went into lockdown. This uncertain time and enforced downtime gave us the opportunity to bring Wicked Boxes to the forefront of our minds, and make our long-running idea a reality.
We are proud to fill our gift boxes with New Zealand made products, and where products aren't readily available here (like tea, coffee and cocoa beans for example), then supporting the small New Zealand businesses who are blending and roasting in New Zealand, or being boutique NZ importers for these products.
A new angle on our idea also came to light. We often shop online, and noticing the amount of plastic packaging products being used to ship products around the country was disheartening. We pledged that if we were going to do this, we wanted no plastic in any of our own gift box packaging, and wanted to be as environmentally conscious as possible.
Our gift box contents are packed in tissue paper inside our cardboard gift box, then decorative paper ribbon is hand-tied around the box, with a cardboard gift tag attached. The whole box is then wrapped in brown paper and taped up with paper packaging tape, so apart from the courier label, everything else can be recycled. We really don't want to add to the plastic waste that is overwhelming our planet.
While the packaging of the products inside our gift boxes isn't always recyclable, we hope to be able to improve this in the future.
We hope you enjoy giving our gift boxes to your friends, family, co-workers and more, while discovering New Zealand made products and supporting New Zealand businesses at the same time.
